Grace, Mercy, and the Word “New”

Grace is God giving us that which we don’t deserve.

Mercy is God delivering us from that which we do deserve.

The word “new” in the New Testament (when used by the apostles at least) points to what God is in.

Something is “new” because God — who is Life — is in it.

He is “new” every morning.

New birth

New covenant

New man (humanity)

New creation

New Jerusalem

New heaven

New earth

New name

New song

New wine

If it’s “new,” God is in it.

“Behold, I make all things new.”

“Behold, I will do a new thing.”

Can you list some other things that the New Testament describes as “new.”

God loves the idea of new music – “sing a new song unto the Lord.”

Ah, that’s a brilliant one, Javi. I recently learned something that should have been obvious. Jesus gave only one NEW commandment (by his own words, it’s true). It’s too significant a fact to ignore, and will change our lives when we plumb the depths of why he singled it out as the only “new commandment” he gave.

    Heb 10.19-20 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the BLOOD of JESUS, by a NEW and LIVING WAY, wich he has consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
John 13.34 A NEW COMANDMENT I give unto you, That you LOVE one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another

Then he added, “Every teacher of religious law who becomes a disciple in the Kingdom of Heaven is like a homeowner who brings from his storeroom new gems of truth as well as old.” (Matt 13:52 NLT)
(NASU: “…who brings out of his treasure things new and old.”

I immediately thought of this passage in II Peter:
“And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the (new) morning star rises in your hearts.”
