Shameless Promotion Day

Update: As promised, comments are now closed. This was a one-day shot. I announced this on other blog posts, on Facebook, on Twitter, and on Google+ several times.

Thanks to all of you who participated. The Blog Manager tells me that five of you still have to follow the instructions at the top of the post (below) for your comments to be approved. Once you do that, your comments will be approved and your blog promoted.

One observation: Many of my regular RSS subscribers never saw this post, and now the hour has past. This is one reason why you will want to subscribe by Email and read the posts each day (I blog each weekday, 5 days a week.) This way, you won’t miss opportunities like this one again. We will be doing things like this in the future without any warning or heads-up. In addition, I’m still offering my Next Reformation seminar free to Email subscribers.

Okay, Fun Seekers. Today is Shameless Promotion Day [applause].

You all have an opportunity to promote your blog or website so that everyone who reads this post will become aware of it.

Please note that you’re essentially getting free advertising on the blog today. (There’s a charge for banner ads on the blog. But today’s exercise is a freebie.)

Three things to keep in mind:

  1. This blog is viewed hundreds of thousands of times each month. So your blog or website is going to be introduced to thousands of people.
  2. A very large percentage of my readers look at the comments section, even long after a post is first published. Keep that in mind.
  3. You are welcome to share this post on Facebook tomorrow so others may see all the blogs, including yours.

That said, if you wish to participate in today’s “shameless promotion,” we simply ask that you do one thing first.

  • If you have a blog, create a new post featuring one of the two posts below. Or both if you like. To make it easy, you can simply copy and paste the headings below and then provide the link to the post(s) – they are provided also.

Or you can create your own headings and your own commentary in the post. But be sure to use the links below. I want to highlight these two posts because they promote the work of others that I deem valuable:

Heading:

N.T. Wright Interview: “Simply Jesus” & Wright Responds to Critics

In the body of the blog:

Click this link to read the unedited interview:

http://frankviola.org/2012/01/23/ntwright - be sure to make this a hyperlink so people can click on it.

Or . . .

Heading:

Scot McKnight Interview: “The King Jesus Gospel” & McnKnight Responds to Critics

In the body of the blog:

Click this link to read the unedited interview:

http://frankviola.org/2012/02/08/scotmcknight - be sure to make this a hyperlink so people can click on it.

That’s it. Easy as cheesecake.

  • For those of you who don’t have a blog, but a website, just add a link to http://frankviola.org somewhere visible on your web page. But if you have a blog, we ask that you carry out the above exercise instead.

Our beloved Blog Manager says that she’s “making a list and checking it twice,” so make sure you do this first. Once you’ve done it, here’s how to promote your blog or website.

In the comments section, provide three things in this order:

1)    The name of your blog or website.

2)    The url (address) of the blog or website.

3)    One to three sentences explaining what your blog or website is about.

Important: The Blog Manager says that if your blog or website disparages, defames, or misrepresents another person or their work, she will not approve your comment. So if your comment isn’t approved, that’s probably why. Either that or you didn’t carry out the first request.

Also: I want to remind you all of #13 on my Advice for Bloggers list. It reads as follows:

Allow Engagement, But Moderate Comments. I realize that not everyone is able to allow comments due to time constraints. Fortunately, I’ve been able to allow them up to this point. Allowing engagement is great for several reasons. However, if you receive a lot of comments, you would be wise to moderate them. The Internet is the Wild Wild West. People can anonymously trash someone if they want. This makes blog moderation a necessity.

Unfortunately, I’ve watched some bloggers allow anyone to post anything they like without any kind of moderation. The result: Some Christians get smeared. This is plain wrong. It violates what our Lord taught, “Treat others the same way you want to be treated.” You wouldn’t want a blogger to allow a comment that attacks your character on their blog.

Your blog should be a platform for edifying conversation, not a venue for promoting the sins of evil communication (Eph. 4:29). All readers should feel safe there. Most bloggers I know responsibly moderate their comments, and some have explicit rules for moderation. You can take a look at mine here (I don’t moderate the comments myself). Some bloggers I know don’t even allow comments because of this problem.

Finally, comments will be closed early tomorrow morning . . . hence the advantage of being an Email subscriber to the blog. It’s so you don’t miss “opportunity posts” like this one. I will write similar “opportunity posts” in the future. So by subscribing, you won’t miss anything.

Okay, let the shameless promotion begin!

The Reason and Purpose For This Blog:

For most of my adult life, I chose to remain stunted and infantile in my Christian walk and used my gifts and talents for myself instead of for God’s glory. It wasn’t until the last few years that I began to grow in my faith and truly learn about surrendering myself to Him; and in the last few months, I have felt inspired to write about the things I have learned along the way and am still learning everyday. I created this blog as I imagine there are many out there that are in the same place I was at and I hope to “open their eyes” to the reality of why we are called to be “in this world, but not of this world.”

  3. Steve Gaither February 29, 2012 at 6:18 pm #

I am a singer/songwriter. I’m allowing free downloads of all my tunes for a limited time on my website http://www.reverbnation.com/stevegaither and yes I am related to Bill Gaither, at least spiritually anyway. He is my brother in the Lord and that is as far as it goes. All my songs are about inspirations and insights that the Lord brings to me often through great books such as Franks. The song, Generation Y, is my paraphrase of the same scripture Frank talks about in The Forgotten Beatitude Part I, which is Matthew 11:16. I used to introduce this song by saying, “Here is a scripture you will probably never hear anyone talk much about”. Frank changed that on Feb. 27th.
Anyway, give my songs a listen. I’m not committed to the status quo in my music styles or lyrical content so to my knowledge there is no one else doing Christian Blues music, or songs that deal with cancer, divorce, and other real life stuff. There is variety from worship style songs, southern rock, blues, pop and even folk styles. I’m a work in progress, so goes my music as well. If you had rather pay for my song instead of downloading them for free, you can go to the iTunes store of any of the major digital distribution dealers. If you want a hard copy of my CD the only way to get one is to go to my website http://www.STEVEGAITHERMUSIC.COM and click the Buy CD link. I am not trying to make a profit on my music so I don’t mind giving it away. But like Frank said in his writings about publishing, it seems that you will reach more people if you sell your product. Strange huh? If you are experiencing organic church and live in my area please let’s get connected. Thanks Frank for this great opportunity.

It also provides a link to my first book, “Love Song of a Flower Child: The Story of My Redemption from the Drop-out Days, the Tune-in, Turn-on Times”, to be published this summer by WestBow Press, a div. of Thomas Nelson.

  15. Jim Thomson February 29, 2012 at 4:28 pm #

I’ve been a pastor and missionary for over forty years. In the last ten years or so, I’ve been challenged by the need in my life and the life of the Church for radical, biblical discipleship according to Luke 14:25-35, in which Jesus tell us that we cannot be His disciples unless we are willing to love Him more than we love our families, our money and our own lives. I have also come to see, by God’s grace, that our top-down leadership structure in the Church is upside down. I am not angry or critical–I am burdened. I have written three books that pertain to these vital topics. Deeper and Leadership on the Brink are available in both paperback and (less-expensive) Kindle editions. :–)

I am a Christ follower that is walking in a post-institutional wilderness. Married, 2 wonderful kids and an amazing wife. Just learning about Christ from others each and every day.

After years of struggle, I have finally been diagnosed… I am allergic to b.s.

This blog is my attempt to relate to others that have the same affliction.

What is the affliction? Being absolutely appalled with the system of church, and the actions and behavior that goes on within.

    It is the system…

    It is the rituals…

It is the way it is boxed up…

Let us find something to ease our allergic reactions together… lets talk.

Excerpt from “about this blog” – Have you ever been to church or had a conversation with a religious person in which you asked honest, difficult questions, only to find yourself dissatisfied or disillusioned with the answers they provided? Perhaps you question the existence of God, what it really means to be a “Christian”, inconsistencies in scripture, the moral track record of religious institutions, the fear and terror related emotions induced by eternal torment and wrath-of-God doctrines, how religion’s insistence on tribal and mythological thinking has stumped human progress in science and learning, etc. You want to know how and why it is that a good God seems to have approved of slavery, the degradation of women, genocide, torture, the ill-treatment of homosexuals or people who are otherwise labeled “outcast”, etc. (cont’d)

Frank has graciously helped us make several of his books available in Russian and they have been of huge benefit and blessing in the Russian-speaking world.
