I’m interested to hear about the various and sundry hobbies and pastimes that you all have.
Things that you do for fun that aren’t work-related. Even if you derive enjoyment from your work or your ministry, I’m interested in hearing about those things that aren’t directly related to either.
For example, I have a friend who is into fishing. That’s what he does for fun. Another is into golf. Another is into tennis. Another loves to hunt. Another is into playing softball in a league. Another enjoys studying and making fine tea. Another friend is into cooking.
What things do you do for fun?

A lot of things really:
Work out (track and weight lift), fishing, boat life, reading and tasting selected exclusive wines with my wife(like Amarone, Barolo) et ceter
.
Of course also: hanging out with friends:)
Just realised I am not very original
I LOVE the outdoors – hiking, jogging, and lately bike riding. Perusing quaint antique shops, historic towns and art galleries are also a favorite. However, my hobby seems to be re-arranging the furniture in my house on a regular basis…for whatever reason. Am trying my hand at acrylic painting these days as well.
great question,
Tinker with my android phone, adding roms, etc
Watch Movies with friends,
play board games,
my wife.
Having dinner with friends and going to arts/music/cultural festivals. Also, playing outside especially mountain biking, water sports, and weight lifting.
Just about anything outdoors. Especially hiking/camping. I enjoy canoeing and kyaking but don’t own one, so I only do that when I’m someplace to borrow or rent one.
Also movies, reading, guitar, and martial arts.
I play tabletop games – board games, Warhammer 40,000, RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons. By myself I really love painting miniatures for the latter two. It’s technically also my job since I run a gaming store, but I’d be lying if I said anything else.
I am member of the Society for Creative Anacronism, the SCA we partake in activities that were done during the Middle ages. I myself am active in the fighting aspects of the game both war fighting and tournament fighting.
My favorite thing to do is watch shows(I’m addicted). Right now I am stuck on the Lost series and almost done. Playing video games when a brother is around, and ofcourse bodybuilding. Two weeks! “That’s all I need with you kid” lol.
I love to fly Kites. Have loved kites since I was a kid. More time and more wind is often my prayer. A great way to be quiet and still. All His Blessings!
I love to do woodworking, play music, interact with people
Just getting back into photography. Enjoy looking at the world from a different point of view.
ROLLERCOASTERS! When we came to your conference in Orlando, we were able to stay on and blow our minds at Universal… Great time
Road trips. I love to get in the car and just go! Usually head for the timber and breathtaking views. Getting up early in the morning and meeting the dawn. Love sunrises on the lake.
Reading your blog
How about you, Frank?
Running! And reading, usually nonfiction
backcountry hiking and camping. writing. tons of time with my wife and kids.
Reading, studying, visiting with friends, bicycling with kids, watching movies, learning to play the harp, dancing and singing (in private!)- long walks in my local park.
I like to play computer games… at least right now… but I have also been known to play guitar & sing, dabble in photography…
Hobbies include making hunting knives and sheaths and woodturning.
I thoroughly enjoy woodworking, and sometimes playing guitar. And of course getting outside and alone with God. There are a number of other things that I enjoy but those are my favorites.
I read Frank Viola blogs! LOL. Seriously though, I enjoy cycling, most recently becoming an avid mountain biker. That with noodling on the guitar and a good book tops the list of things that float my boat.
I love to relax @ the beach under my umbrella, swim and body surf and back to my chair with a drink in my hand and my toes in the sand. Rinse and repeat.
In no particular order: running, slow-smoking ribs with homemade rub and sauce, writing, root beer, a good cigar out on the deck under the stars, great cinema, the beach. All of those, however, pale in comparison to hanging out with my smokin’ hot wife and three adorable daughters.
I love to watch and observe people.
In spare time, its either reading books on Kindle or online gaming – Battlefield 3. I enjoy the competitiveness of online gaming.
Sitting on the deck, doing nothing but reading, thinking and watching the birds, clouds, deer and recently several rabbits meander around the back yard. (Just as long as they don’t try to get into the garden).
Pick my guitar. Watching the Atlanta Braves.
I love this question because it made me think. I am a stay at home mom and I often don’t think about doing fun things that I enjoy. I like to read. I like to have coffee or lunch with a friend or family member. I like to write.
Thanks for making me think. Now I need to put these desires in action.
I raise and release Monarch and Fritillary butterflies.
Photography–I turn the photos into note cards that make nice gifts; reading, walking, e-mailing with friends and family, baking in the fall and winter.
I most like spending time with my wife walking, shopping, discovering, biking, or watching a movie. I also like reading, and listening to podcasts while exercising. I find God in all of those activities.
I enjoy attending at least one family Bible camp/Bible school with my husband every summer. It’s a wonderful way to learn, have fellowship and fun, and to escape from the pressures of the world. God willing my husband and I will be attending one next week that we’ve never been to before!
Playing music (bass and guitar). Reading. Walking and hanging with my wife. Working in the yard (I sometimes enjoy that). Simple workouts and exercise. I plan to start homebrewing eventually
I love to play electric guitar with special interest in Texas Blues, Hard Rock and Metal. More recently, my wife and I have taken to watching Spanish TV Series to improve our Spanish, seeing that we live in Barcelona. I also love playing golf with my 2 sons aged 6 and 8. And then, deep within, I long for deeper and more intimate fellowship with other believers as the gospel takes root in our new town.
I turkey hunt, fish, and bake homemade bread for fun.
Good question, well, I love to play tennis (is a family tradition), watch a good movie, get together with friends, to have a long walk, a good conversation with a good cup of coffee, travel to discover a new place
I’ve tried many things but I keep coming back to walking in the woods.
yeah!

Nice Joel ripping it up. My brother and me built a 7 foot half pipe in our backyard when I was a kid.
Organic gardening has become my meditation time. I love being outside and reflecting on God’s creation. It inspires my photography and painting. Sometimes I like to just sit outside and listen with my eyes closed. Reading, treasure hunting at yard sales, refinishing old furniture and quilting.
For fun I study and speak Elvish. For example, Mae govannen, mellon nîn. Im Bob. Telin le thaed. Lasto beth nin. Tolo dan nan galad.
nothing I like more than walking on the beach!
Oil painting, photography, long walks, reading fiction, and (unfortunately sometimes) Netflix. ; )
If you cnat find me , check a cave, rock bluff, river or trail. I love spending time with THE Creator in the great outdoors!
if you cant find me, check a cave, rock bluff, trail or river. I love meeting God in the great outdoors!
In the movie, “Mulitplicity,” Michael Keaton answered this question by saying, “I golf, but I never go because I don’t have time. And what’s really bad is that I’m going to have cut back even more.”
I read mysteries for enjoyment, with Michael Connelly and Ian Rankin being two of my favorites.
I love playing music. I am with a couple of groups that play in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. It is fun and fulfilling. I love to read as well.
I love to do karaoke with my friends. Cooking is also one of my favorite activities!
I like horseback riding, drawing, playing instruments(violin, cello, piano, irish whistle and bagpipes) and, of course, reading.
I’m into paintball. Scenario paintball to be precise.
I’m a pyrographer.
That’s just a fancy term that means I do woodburnings. I have a woodburning tool, an iron of sorts, that burns into the wood. I do all sorts of different designs. I do sell them from time to time, but I’m a sign language interpreter by trade. Pyrography is very relaxing. I love the smell of the wood burning, especially when I’m working with cedar. I’m the only one within several hundred miles who does this art form. I love having a unique hobby!
I love taking the Glock out, and punching holes in paper targets. Getting too expensive, though…
Writing/reading speculative fiction, archery, camping/hiking/fishing. Body building/fitness
The one thing I like to do when I’m alone and have some free time is cook. I’m not naturally crafty or artistic(scrap-booking is my kryptonite), I’m more of a science nerd and I feel like cooking is a science that allows me to express my creative side. Just writing about it makes me want to run to the kitchen.
I workout out CrossFit 3-4 times a week, I like to read, and I like to play the drums. Sometimes watch movies.
There are 3 activities that I really enjoy and have fun doing them.
1. Playing Golf – You cannot beat a 7am tee off time and see nature in all its glory, I also enjoy the contest with the course.
2. Gardening. I’m a veg gardener and enjoy all aspects particularly eating what grows.
3. Watching films with a good cup of coffee.
Blessings Brother
I love to read, and to scrounge garage sales and Goodwill for my next season’s wardrobe or furniture to refinish. Goofy, I know, but my husband appreciates my frugal hobbies!
Playing around with consumer technology is my main hobby. I play with music & imaging file formats, optimize home communications, run VPN’s to connect to local-only sites in foreign countries.
Just for fun–Hunting, reading, and keeping up with Frank Viola’s writings, blog, podcast and his books.
Charles
Thanks for asking…I love to garden. Flowers and plants. Now has expanded to grwoing from seed and now harvesting my own seeds!!!
I just love cruising with my boys and blasting Memphis May Fire or some other hardcore band. I also enjoy sitting down with a nice book. It’s my down time. And yes, my oldest is almost two years old and already knows how to ‘throw down’. xD
Painting oils on canvas
Observing and interacting with wildlife
Baking for neighbors, friends, and family
Going on evening walks
Swinging on the front porch swing
Canning garden produce
Making jams and sweet relish for neighbors, friends, and family
Love this question. I’m a gamer. Video games. (I’m in my 30s too).
Great question. Bike riding. Have been doing it for a few years and love it.
I just finished your new book and it’s excellent. Thanks for writing it.
