Bren Hughes has written an accessible book called Heaven’s Muscle.
It’s about unleashing the power of the Spirit in your life (so says the title).
I read the book in one sitting. It’s a fast, engaging, easy to digest read.
Bren is a good writer, and he draws the reader into his points through the use of personal story. The book is also laced with Scripture, so I like that it’s biblically based.
Heaven’s Muscle takes a brutally honest look at Bren’s journey from being raised in a Christian home, then being immersed in legalism, and moving from there to agnosticism and even atheism.
Yikes!
Eventually, Bren ended up on the side of discovering what a true Christ-follower was all about.
I believe that many Christians who are disaffected with today’s Christian “religion” will identify with what Bren describes as being a major obstacle in his journey.
In so many cases, God’s people are not familiar with the Holy Spirit. Countless Christians worship the Book instead of the Person, and they are wedded to religious traditions, more than they realize.
This book will be an eye-opener for such people.
Bren talks about an awakening out of legalism and Pharisaical religion. Legalism is still strong today in Christian circles, as much as libertinism is. (These are the two chief enemies of the gospel.)
Bren’s writing style is warm and compelling. Even though it’s a nonfiction book, it reads like a story in many parts.
All in all, I recommend this book for Christians who are part of traditional churches as well as those who are struggling with doubt.
Here is Bren’s bio to give you some more information about the author.
I am an attorney and academic writer with training as a minister. Hailing from Nashville, I currently work for the federal government in Kentucky. I am the author of Heaven’s Muscle and the forthcoming book My Body Is a Weapon. I am blessed with a unique wife and three entertaining sons. My mission is to encourage people to love in spite of their pain, to sense the closeness of God despite their doubts, and to glimpse their full potential in Christ. I do this by offering myself as a faithful conduit – a conduit of love flowing from the heart of God and of wisdom flowing from his scriptures. Please sign up for my newsletter at www.BrenHughes.com. After earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biblical studies from a conservative Christian college, I abruptly became an atheist, then an agnostic for almost three years. The circumstances surrounding my marriage rekindled my faith, and I returned to school and earned my M.Div. My plans on pursuing a doctorate fell through, and I obtained an exciting job as a campus minister in Tallahassee Florida, where I lived for three years. After all three of my sons were born, I applied to law School at Vanderbilt. My wife became very ill during this time and the strain on our marriage was immense. But suddenly supernatural events changed everything. You can read all about this story and how God transformed our lives and showed us the power he’s made available to all his children in HEAVEN’S MUSCLE.
